The Daycare Sick Season

What parents should expect when their child starts childcare and when illness needs a pediatrician’s attention.
Starting daycare is a big transition for the whole family. Along with new friends, new routines, and exciting learning opportunities, many parents are surprised by how many illnesses come home during the first year of childcare. The frequent runny noses, coughs, and fevers can feel overwhelming, but they are a very normal part of early childhood.
Most children in childcare get at least one infection a month, with even higher rates of illness during the first year after starting daycare. Young children are exposed to many new viruses while their immune systems are still learning how to recognize and respond to them. This does not mean your child has a weak immune system. It means their immune system is building experience.
One of the most frustrating parts for parents is feeling like their child is constantly sick. It is very common for congestion and cough to improve and then worsen again as children pick up one virus right after another. Sometimes it can seem like the same illness is lingering, when it is actually multiple viruses back-to-back. Keeping up with vaccines, encouraging hand hygiene, prioritizing sleep and nutrition, and having a plan for sick days can all help make this season a little easier.
While frequent illnesses are expected with daycare, there are times when it is a good idea to check in with your pediatrician. Reach out if your child is not showing some improvement after 1 to 2 weeks, has difficulty breathing or wheezing, develops ear pain, has ear or eye discharge, or develops a new fever that does not fit with the first few days of new symptoms. When in doubt, your pediatrician can help you decide what needs evaluation and what can be managed at home.
Starting daycare is a big step, and the first year may come with more sick days than many parents expect. With time, your child will build experience with common childhood viruses, and your family will become more confident navigating this new season.
