Open Enrollment Tips

Save on healthcare by choosing the right insurance and a DPC pediatrician.
Open enrollment is a great time to take a fresh look at how your family wants to approach healthcare in the coming year. For many families, looking only for the lowest monthly premium isn’t necessarily the best choice. They often find that with the right combination of health plan and DPC membership, they can save both money and time while having easier access to their pediatrician.
One option worth considering is pairing a high-deductible health plan with a direct primary care (DPC) membership. The insurance plan can provide protection for the big, unexpected expenses such as surgeries or emergencies, while your DPC membership covers much of your family’s everyday care. Many families are also able to use HSA funds toward their DPC membership, so it’s worth asking your plan administrator about your specific plan.
Health shares are another option I encourage families to explore. For some families, a health share paired with DPC can be a more affordable way to plan for larger medical expenses while paying a simple monthly membership for everyday care. Health shares aren’t insurance, so they work differently from traditional health plans, but they can be an appealing option for families who understand how the sharing model works and what expenses are eligible.
Every family is different, and insurance and health share options can vary. If you’re shopping during open enrollment, don’t be afraid to look beyond the traditional choices. Take a little time to compare the overall costs and coverage and not just the monthly premium. And if you want to keep your DPC pediatrician, pay close attention to network and referral requirements. Plans that require you to obtain referrals through an in-network doctor may not pair well with a DPC membership.
